Human connection.  Johann Hari had a viral TED talk on the underlying reason for addiction – lack of social connection. Medical doctor Dr Gabor Mate speaks from decades of experience with people who are addicted to heroin about the underlying need we all share for safe, consistent attachment as infants and young children.
