Trauma, PTSD, Developmental Trauma. Resilience, happiness, Positive Psychology. These are all in the news in recent years.

Healing trauma is necessary for a happy life. Some of us have a diagnosis of Developmental Trauma, PTSD, anxiety or depression and our systems may be in crisis. Others of us experience a chronic lack of enthusiasm and enjoyment in life from the effect of trauma. In both cases, there is hope and it is workable.

Scott Kiloby explains the Velcro Effect in his Living Inquiries as thought (words and images) velcroed to sensation (feelings, energies, emotions) in the body. I know this from my own experience. I used to flip between being hijacked by triggers and being shut down. Resistance, avoidance, substance addiction (drugs, alcohol, food) and process addiction (shopping, sex, glowing screens) are common strategies we employ in an attempt to avoid pain and feel better. The Living Inquiries and Natural Rest go to the root by releasing Velcro. They open up space for enjoying life.

Medical researchers have new tools to learn how trauma affects and changes the brain. Recent discoveries: that neglect and abuse delay and harm brain development in children; the protection mechanisms of fight/flight/freeze and how survival of the body comes first; neuroception (a skewed perception of threat after trauma); the importance of working proactively to down-regulate the nervous system; and how it takes thirty seconds of mindful attention for the brain to notice positive experiences. These are mechanisms and systems we can learn about and will cover in the course. This knowledge helps us to release guilt, understand and make sense of our lives.

In the twenty years I’ve been teaching meditation, I’ve learned about the bodymind, the brain and the mechanics of thought. The Living Inquiries are a specific process of working with words, images and sensations that acts like a short-cut or amplifier to working effectively with the bodymind. Participants receive six private facilitated Living Inquiries sessions to experience this first hand. Living Inquiries and Natural Rest form the basis of the group classes through guided practices and discussion.

The nervous system is highly impacted by both chronic and crisis trauma. We work with a variety of tools to support and heal this vital body system. Breathing and relaxation are a foundation of down-regulating hyper-arousal. Western medical researchers confirm 5,000 years of Yoga science with new discoveries about the vagus nerve. I highly recommend a daily practice of the powerful and healing Nadi Shodhanam, alternate nostril breathing, which works directly with the vagal system. Smooth, even diaphragmatic breathing and extending the exhale to at least six seconds allows the parasympathetic nervous system to activate and reduce stress and anxiety.

Additional elements in the online guided practice sessions include: stabilizing sleep and food; fun; finding meaning and satisfaction; releasing shame/guilt/judgement; compassion; and gentle yoga and relaxation practices to increase balance and enjoyment in our bodies and lives. Participants are invited to join me online between classes for regular guided practice.
